What Happened to Blooom
Blooom managed people’s 401(k)s online — you’d connect your workplace retirement account and its algorithm would rebalance and optimize it for a flat fee, without requiring you to become an investing expert yourself. It grew to manage around $5 billion in retirement assets before Morgan Stanley bought the company outright in December 2022, absorbing the whole team rather than continuing to run Blooom as its own consumer product.
We checked blooom.com directly, and the domain no longer resolves to anything — no redirect, no wind-down notice, nothing. Combined with the well-documented Morgan Stanley acquisition, that’s about as dead as a brand gets. The referral link we used to promote (through mbsy.co) also dead-ends: it forwards to a tracking subdomain that 404s.
Blooom was specifically a 401(k) management tool, and we don’t have a direct like-for-like replacement in that exact niche. What we do have is Public, a verified-alive investing app where you can trade stocks, ETFs, and other assets and earn free stock through its own referral program — not the same product as Blooom, but a reasonable option if what you’re really after is a simple way to get invested.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Blooom still around?
No. Morgan Stanley acquired Blooom in December 2022 and absorbed its team; the standalone product shut down, and as of our check, blooom.com no longer resolves at all.
Can I still get a free month with a Blooom promo code?
No — there’s no active Blooom product left to apply a promo code to. The old referral link is also broken (it dead-ends at a 404).
What happened to my old Blooom account?
We don’t have specifics on legacy account access since the shutdown — if you had funds under Blooom’s management, your underlying 401(k) provider (not Blooom) is where that money actually lived, so check there first.
Is there a similar service to Blooom now?
Not one we’ve verified and have a direct link for. Public (linked above) is a solid general investing app if you want a simple way to get money working, but it isn’t a 401(k)-specific tool the way Blooom was.
