I was actually insanely surprised by how great the deals were on the HitList app. I usually use Kayak.com when I’m searching for travel deals, and the flights I saw on HitList were hundreds cheaper (for flights from LA to Europe). Granted, you have to be a bit flexible with your travel dates, but that adds to the spontaneity of it all.

This is an especially useful app if your work schedule (or school) makes you a bit flexible for traveling. The deals I saw a month or two months from now are outrageously good, as long as you don’t mind leaving on a Tuesday rather than the Friday you wanted, or perhaps moving your journey a week later, etc etc.
