Since 2018, any adult 21+ with valid ID can walk into a licensed California dispensary and buy cannabis products — no doctor’s visit required. That’s true in Santa Cruz too. A medical marijuana card (issued through your county after a doctor’s recommendation) is a separate, optional thing on top of that. It can help you avoid part of the state cannabis excise tax, raise how much you’re legally allowed to possess, and — importantly — it’s the only path for 18-, 19-, and 20-year-olds to buy legally, since recreational sales are 21+ only. If none of that applies to you, you can skip the card entirely and just show up with ID.
