Banks Hide Fees in the Rate,
Wise Shows You
the Real Rate.

Transferwise Referral (Hurrah For No Fees!)

TransferWise is now called Wise — same company, rebranded in 2021 — and its referral program still works the same way it always did: no text code, just a link. Sign up through our Wise referral link and Wise waives its transfer fee on your first transfer of up to $600 (or the currency equivalent). This page breaks down what that fee actually is and why it’s so much smaller than what a bank charges you.

How Wise’s Fees Actually Work

Most banks and old-school wire services quietly build their profit into the exchange rate — they’ll tell you the transfer itself is “free” while quoting you a worse rate than the real one, which is where they actually make their money. Wise does the opposite: it uses the live mid-market rate (the same rate you’d see on Google or XE, no markup) and charges a small, upfront fee instead, shown to you before you send a cent. You see the exact fee and the exact amount your recipient gets, both in one screen, before you confirm anything.

That upfront fee is usually a fraction of what a bank wire costs, and it scales with your transfer — sending more can mean a lower percentage fee, and Wise also runs volume-based discount tiers for people moving large amounts regularly. The referral link doesn’t change that fee structure; it just waives the fee entirely on your first transfer, on top of the same honest exchange rate everyone else gets.

About Transferwise

What Happened to the Old $4,500 Free Transfer?

This page used to promote a much bigger free-transfer cap ($4,500) from an older TransferWise promotion. That offer is long gone — Wise’s current, verified referral terms cap the fee waiver at $600 (or the local-currency equivalent), and we’re updating this page to match the real number rather than leave an outdated figure up that would only disappoint you at checkout.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Wise mark up the exchange rate to make its money back?

No. Wise uses the live mid-market rate with no markup and instead charges a small, transparent fee shown before you send — that’s the core difference from a bank, which usually hides its markup inside a worse exchange rate.

Is there a Wise or TransferWise coupon code for fees?

No text code exists. The only way to reduce or waive the fee as a new customer is Wise’s referral link, which we’ve linked throughout this page.

How much do I actually save on my first transfer?

Wise waives its transfer fee on up to $600 (or the equivalent) of your first transfer — on a typical transfer that’s usually somewhere between $5 and $30 saved, on top of the honest exchange rate you’d get anyway.

Does Wise charge more for large transfers?

The opposite, generally — Wise runs volume-based fee discounts for people sending larger amounts regularly, on top of its already-transparent, percentage-based fee structure.
