What Happened to Getaround?
Getaround was a peer-to-peer carsharing service that let you rent cars from people nearby, unlocking them right from your phone. It ran into serious financial trouble: its stock was delisted from the NYSE in July 2024 and moved to over-the-counter trading, it announced the end of its U.S. car-sharing and HyreCar operations in February 2025 citing liquidity problems, it sold its remaining European business to the Danish company GoMore in April 2026, and its board announced plans to dissolve and liquidate the company entirely in June 2026. In short: if you’re in the U.S., Getaround isn’t a working option anymore.
There are still a few other car-sharing and rental services worth a look. We’ve refreshed the list below and marked which ones are actually still running.
Turo is our top pick and the one we personally use most. It’s great when you need a reliable car for a longer trip, or a van or pickup truck for a day or two of moving furniture — though you do have to coordinate pickup or delivery with the car’s owner, so it’s better booked a day or more in advance than used for something on-demand. See our full Turo coupon code writeup for the current sign-up credit. Visit Turo to try it out.

Two Options From This List That No Longer Work
Skurt used to deliver rental cars straight to you, on-demand — but skurt.com is now a parked domain listed for sale, and its old affiliate link no longer resolves. It appears to be defunct.
Car2Go was another on-demand carsharing app, but it merged into Share Now in Europe and shut down its North American service back in 2020. The car2go.com domain now redirects to Free2Move, a different Stellantis-owned car-sharing brand that mainly serves European markets. We’re leaving the link here for reference, but it’s not a live U.S. option.

Live Alternatives to Getaround (2026)
Zipcar (owned by Avis Budget Group) is more of an on-demand carsharing service — open the app, find a car nearby, book it, and unlock it with your phone. It’s still an active service as of our last check. Visit Zipcar to see current offers.
RVShare is a peer-to-peer marketplace for renting RVs directly from owners — a solid option if you need something bigger than a car. It’s still active as of our last check. Try RVShare via this link.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Getaround still operating?
Not in the U.S. Getaround ended its American operations in February 2025, and as of June 2026 its board has announced plans to dissolve the company entirely after selling its European business.
What’s the best Getaround alternative right now?
We’d point you to Turo first — it has the widest selection and the most active community of hosts of the options we track. Zipcar is the better pick if you want something more on-demand and don’t need to coordinate with an owner.
What happened to Car2Go and Skurt?
Both are defunct as standalone U.S. services. Car2Go shut down in North America in 2020 and now lives on as Free2Move in Europe; Skurt’s domain is parked and for sale, with no working site or affiliate link.
Can I still use my old Getaround account?
We can’t confirm either way — Getaround ended U.S. operations in February 2025, so we’d assume not, but check directly with Getaround if you have an existing account or pending payout.
