What Happened to Via?

Via started out exactly as this page originally described it: an on-demand rideshare service where you could grab a shared ride from an everyday driver, similar to Uber or Lyft but often cheaper because rides were shared with other passengers heading the same direction. Somewhere along the way, Via shifted its whole business model. Its own site now describes itself as providing “software and operations that elevate transit in every community,” with products for microtransit, paratransit, school transportation, corporate shuttles, and medical transportation — sold to cities, transit agencies, universities, and organizations, not booked directly by individual riders the way Uber or Lyft is.

We confirmed this two ways: Via’s own homepage no longer describes a general consumer rideshare product, and an App Store search turns up no unified “Via” app — only separate, city-specific apps that Via built for individual transit programs (a University of Chicago app, a Detroit-area app, and similar programs elsewhere). If you don’t happen to live somewhere with one of these specific municipal or campus programs, there’s no “Via” you can just download and use like you could in 2017.

This page historically carried two different personal referral codes for $10 off a first ride: kate9c8 and harry3d6. We’re keeping both listed for the record, but since there’s no general consumer Via app left to enter them into, don’t expect either to still work.
