What Happened to Velocity?

That’s our original Velocity promo graphic. The restaurant-payment app it promotes no longer exists — kept here for the record, not as a live offer.

Velocity was a London-based “pay from your phone” restaurant app that, back when we first wrote this page, had just acquired a similar US app called Cover — the two together covered restaurants in New York, San Francisco and Los Angeles. But Velocity’s founders had bigger plans: between 2014 and 2017 the company pivoted entirely away from restaurant bill-splitting and rebranded as Velocity Black, a members-only luxury concierge service (travel, dining reservations, exclusive events) with an annual membership fee. In June 2023, Capital One acquired Velocity Black for $265 million and folded it into Capital One Travel and Dining in 2024.

We confirmed this two ways: there’s no “Velocity” restaurant-dining app anywhere in current App Store search results (only the unrelated Velocity Black luxury app and unconnected apps with similar names), and the acquisition/rebrand history is well documented in trade press. There’s simply no $5-off, pay-your-bill-from-your-phone Velocity app left to use the DINEOUT1 code on.
