Peapod launched back in 1989 out of Skokie, Illinois, and became one of the first companies in the country to let you order groceries online and have them delivered to your door. For years it ran its own app and website covering the Chicago area, Milwaukee, Indianapolis, the Northeast, and the Mid-Atlantic, building out its own warehouses and delivery vans well before Instacart or same-day grocery delivery were common.

Ahold Delhaize (parent company of Stop & Shop and Giant Food) had owned Peapod since the 1990s/2000s, and gradually wound the consumer-facing brand down. Peapod pulled out of its founding Midwest markets (Chicago, Milwaukee, Indianapolis) in February 2020 to focus on the East Coast. Then, in February 2022, the company renamed its remaining operation Peapod Digital Labs and repositioned it as the technology and fulfillment engine behind Stop & Shop’s and Giant’s own delivery services, rather than a shopping destination in its own right.
