What Happened to SilverCar?

SilverCar rented exactly one kind of car — a silver Audi A4 — and built its whole pitch around skipping the rental counter entirely: reserve on the app, walk up whenever you were ready, and go, with free wifi, GPS, satellite radio, and fair fuel/toll tracking included. Audi bought SilverCar in 2017 and ran it as a proof-of-concept for app-based, counter-free rentals. Audi shut down SilverCar’s consumer rental operations in 2021. The technology didn’t fully disappear — it was folded into Dealerware, a fleet-management platform Audi/SilverCar’s team built for car dealerships to manage loaner vehicles, which is a business tool, not something you can rent a car through as a consumer. Silvercar.com redirects there today, and we couldn’t find a SilverCar app in the App Store anymore — both confirm the consumer service is gone.
This post originally featured two different codes in a few places — OMRXJAQV (the one in the title and most of the copy) and CGRIM (mentioned separately in the review text as our own referral code). We’re not able to figure out at this point which one, if either, was still accurate by the time SilverCar shut down, and since the service is gone, it doesn’t affect anything functionally — neither code works today. We’re preserving both mentions rather than picking one to avoid pretending we have certainty we don’t.

What We Liked About SilverCar (For the Record)
Renting was genuinely simple: reserve through the app, skip the counter and paperwork, and pick up an Audi A4 whenever you arrived. A receipt emailed automatically after drop-off. No hunting for the cheapest sub-compact — every SilverCar rental was the same well-equipped car. For frequent business travelers especially, it removed one of the more annoying parts of a work trip. That combination of app-first booking and standardized fleet is exactly what made SilverCar feel ahead of its time in 2016 — and it’s also roughly the pitch Turo and Sixt’s own apps make today.
